I took part in many expeditions in very important mountains such us the Aconcagua, where I worked more than 10 years ago, as well as in mountains of Argentina such as Ojos del Salado volcano and Pissis mountain, between others. These last two are the second and third highest mountains in the continent after the Aconcagua, the “Colossus of America”.
I had the opportunity to assist in search and recue operations in different wilderness areas and scenarios.
I have been lucky enough to walk for several mountains with people of different nationalities for wich I had to learn english and french .
I often ask myself the question that usually is made to people that somehow, choose an uncommon activity. An uncommon profession too...Why?
And I think and ask myself: Why stand still? Why keep a dream? Why keep wanting to know what else there is? Why stay with the comfort, with the day to day, with the TV control, with the city cement, its horns and people going from here to there? Why content yourself with what there is around if I can gain a little more and see more? And thousand of whys
And I think and answer myself: Because when I climb and change the perspective of what I see, I can find something more, because when I climb I can take a broader view of things. Because nature is great.
Because I can learn, I can teach and I can grow. Because may be it makes me a better person!
Because when I see my feet moving along the path to the top, I think in all the job I did to get there, the cold in my fingers when I turn on the heater, the wind, the tent discomfort, the half-baked pasta, juice and cereal bar, the knee deep snow...I see that it is worth!
Because surely I find a friend at my side, because I know other cultures, other people. Because I can reach my personal top.
Why climbing a mountain? Just because it is there.
Hernan Moreno
